Restore Damaged or Decayed Teeth with Natural-looking Porcelain Crowns
Patients in Dothan, Alabama, with decayed or damaged pearly whites can give their teeth a second chance with dental crowns. Shaped like a tooth, a dental cap changes the size, shape, and health of a compromised tooth to improve the function and aesthetics of your smile.
Dental crowns come in many sizes and shapes. Although you can opt for gold or metal crowns, Dr. Durwood A. Nowell in Southern Pine Dental prefers porcelain crowns for their aesthetics and biocompatibility. These crowns provide a restoration solution that preserves oral function while avoiding the metallic appearance often associated with traditional crowns.
Why do I need a dental crown?
Dental crowns are one of the most popular choices in dentistry because of their versatility. Dr. Nowell can recommend a dental crown to handle numerous cosmetic and functional roles, including:
- Protecting a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment
- Repairing extensive tooth decay or damage
- Strengthening a weakened tooth
- Restoring your tooth with a dental implant
- Securing a dental bridge
- Replacing failing tooth fillings
- Cosmetically improving a misshapen or severely discolored tooth
As long as you have a healthy tooth structure, a dental crown can save your tooth from extraction. Once we crown your tooth, we restore its appearance and strength to serve you for many years.

The dental crown procedure
You need at least two dental appointments to restore your tooth with a dental crown. During the initial consultation, we examine your tooth to ensure it’s eligible for a dental cap. If yes, we numb your gums with local anesthesia and then shave your tooth to ensure it accommodates your crown’s thickness and natural size.
Next, we take your oral impressions, which our master ceramists will use to custom-make your crown. Since fabricating your dental crown requires a few days, you’ll leave our office with a temporary crown to protect your prepped teeth.
You’ll book another appointment with Dr. Nowell when your crown is ready. We’ll remove the temporary restoration, clean your tooth, and try your new crown to ensure it matches the design specifications. Where necessary, we make a few adjustments to your crown to ensure it fits comfortably and looks natural.
